1. Deciding to quit
Making the decision to change is not a once-off event – it is a process consisting
of 4 stages (Prochaska and Diclemente):
- Precontemplation stage: not ready to consider changing
- Contemplation stage: willing to consider
change sometime in the future
- Action stage: ready to work on changing
now
- Maintenance stage: desire to work on making the change
a permanent one

2. Getting rid of the drug from your body
The easiest and most effective way of doing this is by using NRT - nicotine
replacement therapy. NRT supplies the body with lower levels of nicotine than
in cigarettes but enough to relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms experienced
when trying to quit. Nicorette® has a low dependence potential and is much safer
than smoking cigarettes.
Millions of people worldwide have used Nicorette® to successfully quit smoking.
Clinical trials have shown that smokers who use NRT are more likely to successfully
stop smoking, compared to smokers who use willpower alone.
Several placebo-controlled studies have shown that Nicorette® effectively reduces
smoking and allows this reduction to be maintained in the long-term, increasing
the likelihood of cessation. 3. Getting rid of the drug from your mind
To help you deal with the process of getting rid of the drug from your mind,
behavioural counselling is recommended. Don't worry, you don't have to go and
see a shrink! All you need is someone to remind you of the benefits of quitting
and to support you when you hit a rough patch.
The Nicorette® Kick Butt programme gives you access to:
- Support Packs, posted to you at key intervals of your programme
(including a very handy, day at a time calendar).
- An E-mail/SMS support programme that will provide you with daily
support for the first 4 weeks of the programme, and at key intervals
thereafter.
- A “day at a time diary”, that informs you of your key quitting
milestones, and the benefits you should be experiencing each step
of the way.
- Access to our resident medical expert, who you can answer any
questions you may have, on Nicorette, smoking, and the process
of quitting.
