I SMOKE 15 CIGS A DAY.. I FIND THE 21 MG TOO STRONG.
WHAT PATCH MG. SHOULDI START WITH PLEASE. |
Dear Enquirer - your queries have come to the South African Nicorette website - and patches of these strengths are not available in this Country. II would advise you to discuss this matter with your local pharmacist.
However, it seems that you may well be better served by the lower strength patch. Often establishing the best strength patch to use is a matter of trial - and this is largely due to the different smoking habits rather than the number of cigarettes/day that were being smoked.
I trust these brief comments are helpful to you.
With every best wish - dr. john

Hi Doctor
Is the any substitute that I subcribe or use instead of cigarettes,
Thanks
Tracey |
Dear Tracey - It is just great that you are thinking about quitting poisoning yourself with the more than 4700 known toxins in cigarette smoke!!
The Nicorette Gum is a very well documented medication to assist in quitting smoking. Do have another look at our website in this regard - (http://www.nicorette.co.za/legal/privacy.php)
However, there are other substances and approaches available - and I would suggest that you discuss this very important topic with your local pharmacist or with your own doctor - so as to get the best possible help.
With every best wish for becoming a healthier and wealthier cigarette-free Lady !!

I have just started with the nicorette programme. I am using nicorette gum 4 mg but find on chewing the gum that it tends to burn my mouth quite a lot . Is this normal. Regards Neville |
Dear Neville
Thank you for your query - Dr John is out of the office this afternoon and I will try to help in his absence.
How are you chewing the gum ? Sometimes if you are chewing the gum too fast you may feel irritation of the mouth and throat ?
Try to chew the gum very slowly until it is tasted or a slight tingling is felt in the mouth. Because of its nicotine content, the gum does not taste like an ordinary chewing gum, As soon as the gum can be tasted, stop chewing. After the taste or tingling is almost gone (about one minute), the gum can be chewed slowly again until the taste is more pronounced. Then stop chewing again. Try to chew the gum slowly for 30 minutes to release most of the nicotine.
In order to try and give you a better answer please would you kindly consider responding to the following questions - we follow up on all product experiences and all information is treated as strictly confidential:
Your date of birth:
Your address:
How many cigarettes were you smoking before and for how long did you smoke ?
When did you start with the Nicorette 4 mg Chewing Gum ?
How many gums are you chewing a day ?
After how many gums did this burning feeling start and how long does this sensation last ?
have you had to use any other medication and/or liquid to alleviate this burning feeling ?
How is your general health ?
Are you allergic to anything/medicines in particular - if so please to list
Are you currently taking any other medications - if so please to list ?
Thank you very much
Kind regards

Hi there
I have been using nicorettes for over 5 months and still crave. the package says I should not use it for more than 3 months. what am I supposed to do then ? |
Greetings to you and thanks for the enquiry! You were supposed to slowly-but-surely reduce your use of the Nicorette gum over the 3 months down to zero, after quitting smoking. This is what you should be doing now !! Then you will really benefit your health - and your finances !!
While using the Nicorette gum is thousands of times safer than smoking, you must get yourself CLEAN and non-addicted... and it can be done with proper determination. Why not get yourself respectably CLEAN of all drug ??
Please let us have your e-mail address so that we can follow-up on this discussion ??
Every best wish - dr. john

Can chewing Nicorette over long time be harmful?
Can it cause mouth-ulcers and can this lead to cancer? I have stopped smoking over 15 years now but am dependant on the Nicorette.
|
Dear Enquirer - thank you for the queries.
Mouth ulcers are quite common when quitting smoking, and may be associated with the continued use of Nicorette Gum. Good and regular oral hygiene usually allows this condition to recover. However, a wide spectrum of circumstances can be causally associated with the occurence of mouth ulcers - such as nutritional deficiencies, and gastro-intestinal disorders; It would be wise to check with your health care professional !!
Long-term use of Nicorette is undoubtedly thousands of times safer than smoking !! But surely you can slowly but determinedly reduce your Nicorette use right down to zero, and so get yourself really clean, and non-addicted ?? No one will recommend the long-term use of any potentially harmful substance. It is your health that is at risk - and quitting the Nicorette gum is something only you can do.
Go for CLEAN - and you'll greatly benefit your health - and your finances !!
Please be so good as to let us have your e-mail address so that we can follow-up on this discussion ?
Every best wish - dr. john.

HI DOC, I HAVE BEEN SMOKING FOR 6 YEARS AND I HAVENT BEEN SMOKING FOR 29 DAYS SO FAR, I USED TWO 4mg GUMS PER DAY,I HAVE STOPPED USING THEM AND THATS WHEN MY PROBLEM OF NAUSEA AND STOMACH CRAMPS STARTED. IS THIS NORMAL TO A PERSON WHO IS ON THE PROCCESS OF STOP SMOKING. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRING MESSAGES FROM KICK THE BUTT,THEY REALLY KEEP ME GOING. MY BREATHING HAS IMPROVED,BUT I SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE I AM BURNING IN MY CHEST.WHAT CAN CAUSE THAT.
REGARDS
THABO |
Dear Thabo - Very many thanks for your information and enquiries. You are doing a wonderful job of quitting, and I think that the few problems that you are experiencing - nausea and cramps and chest 'burning' - are among the expected withdrawal symptoms that are well know to occur when quitting addictive substances. These symptoms should slowly but surely diminish over the next week or so. They are a sign that your body goes on craving all the poisonous substances in cigarette smoke !! So you are well rid of all of these toxins, and your health will improve steadily. Your Body is doing a great job of clearing out all the accumulated damage.
However, If your symptoms do not subside very markedly, then a visit to your doctor would be a next sensible move !!
Again - our heartiest congratulations for your excellent decision to quit poisoning yourself. It would be very difficult to find a better New-Year resolution than this !!
With every best wish - dr. john.

Hi Doctor -- I have just started using the patches & they really working. However, yesterday when my husband went to buy some more, he was told at a pharmacy that they have been taken off the market due to bad side effects eg bad mood swings etc. I cannot understand this. Is this true? Thank you, Mandy |
Dear Mandy - No - there are no new safety concerns about Nicorette Patches - However the problem is an 'out-of-stock' situation !!!
This sad situation has occured as we are awaiting the availability of a revised version of the Patch.
In the meantime all we are able to offer you is the Nicorette Gum.
Johnson & Johnson do make sincere apologies for this situation.
From my perspective, the gum has shown excellent efficacy and benefit for thousands of 'quitters', but it certainly lacks the convenience of the Patch.
With every best wish - dr. john. |

Hi doc,
What can i do if i have nausea and stomach cramps/upset.
Thanks
Thab0 |
Hi Thabo
Dr John is only back tomorrow but I will try to help you in his absence. Please to kindly give me more details so that I can answer you:
1) Have you stopped smoking, is this why you have nausea and stomach cramps ? How many cigarettes did you smoke and for how long have you been smoking, did you simply stop "cold turkey" ? perhaps
Are you using any nicotine replacement aids to help you stop smoking e.g. Nicorette Gum or Patches and if so what strength are you using and what dosage are you using and for how long ?
How long have you had the nausea/stomach cramps, when do you experience these symptoms ?
Thank you and kind regards
